CLUTTER-FREE Gift Ideas: Give Something They’ll Enjoy, Not Something They Have to Store
This year for Christmas, my mother asked for “consumable” gifts.

“I don’t have space anymore,” she told me.
That got me thinking about all the people I meet as a professional organizer. So many of us already have plenty of stuff. Sometimes the best gift isn’t something that needs to find a place in the house—it’s something we can enjoy, use up, experience, or simply appreciate.
So, if you’re looking for gifts that don’t add to someone’s clutter, here are some ideas to get you thinking.
Give a Class or Lesson
Learning something new can be a wonderful gift, and there’s no clutter left behind when the class is over!
My mother, for example, has taken pottery and ukulele classes. Depending on the person, you could give:
- Sewing lessons
- Painting or drawing classes
- Cooking classes
- Computer classes
- Dance lessons
- Foreign language classes
- Yoga
- Karate or other martial arts
- Horseback riding
- Tennis lessons
- Acting classes
You might even find a class that gives someone the chance to try something they’ve always wanted to do but never made time for.
Give an Experience
Tickets to an event or activity can create memories without creating more things to store.
My husband is a big movie fan, so movie theater tickets would be a perfect gift for him. Other possibilities include:
- Concert tickets
- Sporting events
- Theater performances
- Golf or mini-golf
- An amusement park
- Ice skating or roller skating
- Indoor skydiving
- Go-karting
- Axe throwing
- A photo shoot
- A special restaurant
- Plane tickets for a getaway
Think about what the person enjoys doing—or something you could do together.
Give a Service
Services are another great clutter-free gift because just about everyone has something they would love to have done for them.
Personally, I think a professional organizer is a pretty great gift, but I may be a little biased!
Other ideas include:
- Massage
- Manicure or pedicure
- Facial
- Personal training
- Pet sitting
- Babysitting
- Handyman services
- Interior design
- House cleaning
- Personal chef
- Lawn mowing
- Pool cleaning
- A/C and heating maintenance
- Pest control
- Gutter cleaning
- Tree trimming
And honestly, this category could go on and on. Think about a chore or service the recipient doesn’t particularly enjoy—or simply doesn’t have time to do.
Give Something Delicious
Food can be a wonderful gift because it gets enjoyed instead of taking up permanent space.
My dad often sends special foods, such as Omaha Steaks, for Christmas. We appreciate it because steak is something we don’t often buy for ourselves, but we certainly enjoy eating it!
Other possibilities include:
- Special chocolates
- Homemade goodies
- Wine or spirits
- Restaurant gift cards
- Specialty food subscriptions or deliveries
- Harry & David
- HelloFresh
- Blue Apron
- Kringles from Racine
- Edible Arrangements
The possibilities are almost endless—and once it’s eaten, there’s nothing left to organize!
Give to a Cause
For someone who already has everything they need, consider making a donation to a charity that is meaningful to them.
It can be especially thoughtful if you choose an organization connected to something they care deeply about. You can make the donation in their honor and let them know you chose it with them in mind.
The Best Gift May Be Less Stuff
I’m certainly not suggesting that nobody should give traditional gifts. Sometimes a thoughtfully chosen physical gift is exactly what someone wants.
But if you have someone on your Christmas list who says, “I really don’t need anything,” believe them! Give them something they can experience, enjoy, use, learn from, or appreciate—without giving them one more thing to find a place for.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful—and slightly less cluttered—holiday season!
